Why were there so many serial killers active specifically from the '70s to the '90s?

People became fascinated by them. There’s no reason to believe that they are any less common. I have friends in law enforcement who tell me that there are still serial killers out there. We have learned a lot from their predecessors though. First, they don’t report them in the media as often because that tends to make some killers more prolific. They seek the attention. Second, investigation techniques have significantly improved. So we might catch the typical killers in short order, before their numbers are newsworthy. The most challenging cases are the ones who offend in multiple states. Sometimes it takes a long time to identify a pattern and predict where they might attack next in order to catch them. Sometimes we simply never do.

I think cos they were so hard to catch. I'm sure there are many people with similar tendencies now but technology has improved to make it much more challenging to get away with multiple murders.

The pay was higher then and you didn't need a license like you do now.
