In a street confrontation, is it safer to punch first?

If you're trying to protect yourself, your ass is going to jail. For a good 10 years.

Having said that, in certain situations, where I'm severely outnumbered, or if I had a girl with me, I ain't giving any benefit of the doubt. I go apeshit.

Basically, if I'm in mortal danger, I do what I need to do.

I talked to a black belt in taekwondo. He said you're allowed by law to throw the first Punch if you have witnesses that will state that you gave enough verbal warnings and you couldn't get the guy out of your personal space. So in that case if the other person proves to be an imminent threat, you can knock their block off. But good luck getting all the stars to align in that scenario. His philosophy was it if you don't get the first punch in there might not be a second punch.

The first puncher usually wins. The problem is the law usually sees you as the aggressor. Safer to slowly back away and let then come to you before thumping them. That way witnesses will confirm you were only defending yourself

Probably, but I would prefer to punch second, that way, I can claim self defense. So in legal terms, it's better to punch second
