Technically, long ‘a’ then schwa; i’ve never heard anyone use short ‘a’ or long ‘a’ on the second syllable.
Data is plural for datum. Being a midwesterner, most of my mid-word tees are soft, and pronounced like dees. Daddum and doddum just sound extra dumb. Plus i strive for consistency in my application of language. So dātum sounds better to me. Therefore dātæ is my preferred pronunciation. However, both are accepted and relatively common. So i have never corrected anyone on either pronunciation. I certainly would if i heard dātă, dătă, dātā or dătā though. Once i finished laughing, of course. Ell oh ell!
IPA is a million times more clear here, especially if English is someone's second language, and they say the latin A /a/. English has almost lost /a/ except for words like "part".
I say /deɪ. ta/ (the last 'a' is close to a shwa, but not quite it), which I guess matches the option long A, short A. English is my third* language by the way.
I wasn't aware of more than 2 versions the word "data" is being pronounced. I only heard about the one starting with "day-" /deɪ/ (most common), or "dah-" /dæ/, but none ending with "-tay" /teɪ/.
Both dah tah and day tah are used here. Strictly speaking it should be dah tah here but I've only ever heard people using the English pronounciation
Not sure if that is correct since English is my third language but I say it as it is mentioned on the first option

The real question is, do you say “the data is” or “the data are”.
@Jersey2 The interesting thing is that both are grammatically correct. Data can be a collective noun, in which case it's considered singular, or a common noun, where it's a plural.
Notice that the definite article "the" can be either singular or plural., unlike many other languages that have separate singular and plural definite articles. "Le/La" and "Les" in French, for example.
English is a weird language, with all kinds of rules, most of which are regularly broken.
I always treated it as a noun. Most did in tech. Only the rare snob, my opinion, tried to use it as plural and then try and school us. These were very forgettable techies who seemed to cling to such things but yet were overall weak in their understanding of the world we lived in, ie, our corner of the Tech industry.
Yes and no. For clarity, you would use singular modifiers for a singular data set and plural modifiers for multiple data sets. Similar to the application of people versus peoples.
‘The data is strong supporting the existence of black hole stars.’
‘The data on black hole stars are inconsistent and no conclusions can be respectfully drawn at this time.’
The rule would apply the same as if you weren’t omitting the word ‘set’ or ‘sets’.
Day-tah in English. In other languages I speak which are more phonetic Dah-tah
dah-tah, short A, short A.
Not saying it's correct...
Here is me saying it Live a minute ago
I am hearing the first vowel as /æ/, and second one is prolly a shwa. Every once in a while I hear it pronounced just like that.
It's not rude to correct someone for butchering the language.
DAY-tah. I do try to pronounce peoples names properly...
It is like this
Like Brent Spiner's character on Star Trek: The Next Generation
I say it “day-tuh.”
Like “day” and then “tuh.”
The “dat-uh” way always sounds a little off to me. What about you?
Rhymes with whack. lolxxxxxxxxxxxxx
