Well it can be misleading. I always believe that our minds can pump things up to more than what they really are, and in reality there is no chance for things to pan out as imagined.
It can also go the other way. Sometimes a very good person can completely fall out of grace because of some psychological dilemma involving a previous experience. For example, if a girl got raped by a tall guy with long hair and leather jacket, a nice guy with the same appearance would have a hell if a time getting in her head. She subconciously blocks out men with that description because of what happened in the past.
This happened to me once with this girl I was seeing. She was beautiful every time I looked into her eyes but when we were apart, my thoughts immediately tied her to this other girl from High School who wasn't so attractive. They had the same height, body type, style, ethnicities, and hair color as well as a love for film. My mind kept mixing up the two and it was horrible because she was so beautiful in person.
Its pretty much just your mind doing whatever the fu it wants to do.

It might feel nice on the upside when you can't forget them because they are good to you, but when they get stuck in your mind on the down swing, it's usually because you didn't get the closure you needed and things ending wrong. At that point you wish they would just get out. It can go either way... =P
No, some people need to get out of my mind haha. One person in particular.
