How about... musicians who work out?
Frankly I think it is unfair that you are creating a divide between musicians and athletes, and thus perpetuating the dumb jock and shy artistic guy stereotypes. I have met countless athletes who are talented, intelligent, and creative, as well as many musicians and artists who work out and have very, very nice bodies.
The best way to overcome your inadequacies isn't to hate those who have what you crave, but to do it bigger and better than them.
For the record, I grew up as (and still am) a bespectacled nerd. I rarely play sports and spend a great deal of time reading, writing, and making art. But I work out regularly and maintain a very nice figure.
It is also easier for boys than girls to sculpt their bodies, so pick up a pair of dumbbells and get to it!
It really isn't that difficult to have everything if you're willing to put in the effort.

To answer the original question, I would be more inclined to develop an interest in a musician, simply because I understand what it takes to be a great one and I've never been very interested in many sports. But if he's passionate about the sport, it could still be a turn-on, even if I don't understand much about the particular sport.
As far as your other question you asked later - When most people say that looks are important, I don't think they mean to be extremely shallow. It's just the truth. Before you really get to know someone (character/personality/talents), all you have to judge them by is how they look. That's no one's fault, so we can't really get mad when people say that looks are important, because they are - good looks catch our attention and help us form the initial attraction. The rest just makes the interest/attraction grow and become deeper.
I prefer Musicians over Athletes any day. Of course I am a Musician myself, so I know the character/personlity traits are very important to me.
You need to be slightly more specific or you'll get weird answers. For instance, people are more likely to picture pros or good college atheletes in major sports (big 4) or rock stars for musicians. In that case, girls for instance may prefer musicians.
However, if you specified the most common atheletes in schools, then you're really talking about football, baseball, basketball, tennis and/or track and field for the atheletes, and band or orchestra kids for the musicians.
And I'm guessing in that case a LOT of the girls may change their answers. . .
they both are unperferable. Seriously, at least if I were to choose.

Most of the guys I've liked or dated have been musicians. A lot of my social circle is musically inclined or otherwise creatively talented and/or work in the service industry [as cooks, bartenders, baristas, in restaurants etc, located downtown which is also where a lot of bars/music venues are], so it's kind of unavoidable. I can't play any instruments, but I'm the creative type, and we end up in the same crowd. I've liked a couple athletes, but they weren't stereotypical, and were also musicians, haha.
Athletes I prefer. I didn't mean to do. But guys who really love working out and themselves don't smoke and drink that much. And going to sleep earlier than others. Haha This is my case though. All of my exs don't smoke and barely drink. This fact makes me think them much more attractive.
Jocks creates a greater sexual attraction in me, but they seem less stable. Musicians would create more like a soul mate attraction in me. So, if I were to date a guy, then I would totally pick a musician because I am the type of girl who seeks to find a guy who would seem to last in a relationship.
I don't like the jock type or really athletes I'd have to go with the musicians, though typically the guys I go for are nerds in a way but also jerks at the same time.
Im very attracted to men who can play an instrument well but I think that's because I'm a musician myself.
