If you were forced to choose between your pet and a stranger who would you save and why?

Interesting how some of you will save an animal over a human. Why is that?

I'd save the stranger without even thinking about it. I really don't see how anyone could even consider anything else.

I have no idea if I've ever saved any lives, but I've run to assist with accidents several times. They might be a stranger, but when something like that happens they seem like the most important person in the world. On the news you hear about people dying all the time, and it doesn't really mean much because it's distant. But when you are there, suddenly you care a great deal if they live or not. It becomes personal. Once you've tried to assist, if they happen to die it's like somebody you know dies...not at all like some stranger on the news. If you see them hauled away in an ambulance, every part of you *wills* them to live because it becomes so important to you.

I can't believe what I'm reading! I loved all my pets dearly, but I could never justify saving a pet over a human being (unless the person was evil, but since he/she is a stranger I would give him/her the benefit of the doubt). A dog or a cat or a horse or a bird or a whatever, no matter how great and loving is an animal at the end. This question reminds me of the commercials to give money to charities that save abused animals. It's really sad what is done to those animals, but I could never justify giving money to save a dog when that same money can save a starving kid. This question was a real eye opener for me; it's nice to know that someone will most likely choose their cat over me, smh, and people wonder where common courtesy has gone while we value the life of an animal more than that of a person's. I am appalled!

If you form a close enough bond the pet isn't just an animal to you anymore, it is like a family member.

I do not know this stranger...for all I know they could have been a complete a**hole.

So that will be my choice.

A lot of people say they'll save their pet. So lets rephrase the question.

If I'm forced to choose between saving my pet and saving your mother, am I supposed to save my pet and let your mother die? That's what you are saying, right?

That stranger could be a loving mother (your mother maybe), father, husband, wife, daughter, son. etc...Choosing your pet just so you are happy is incredibly selfish considering how many people that decision can hurt...but who cares cares you got your dog right? while the little boy, wife, father, mother, brother, are all crying themselves to sleep because they lost a loved one. I try to refrain myself as much as possible, but you're a brain-dead idiot!

guy532 gets it, iPood is not able to look beyond the surface. If you ignore the point of view (which is the only thing I changed) the results are exactly the same. A pet lived and a mother/father/brother/sister died. That is the result of choosing to save a pet. POV doesn't change that fact. Whatever choice you make, the same rules apply to everyone. That means that they can save their pet and let your mother die. They would not be any more or less morally right or wrong than you are.

The only pet I've ever had was a dwarf hamster and I loved her dearly but they don't have much of a lifespan though mine managed to live the full two years, I would save the stranger.

If it was a child human, I would save the child, if it was an adult they can save there own ass, I would then saving my pet that loves me unconditionally.

With regards to your update, most of them are people who consider the pet as their child. The pet lives with them in the house and goes as far as eating from the same plate. No doubt we would all love our pet if we had one but human is a human and an animal is an animal... particularly a dog because in 95% cases by pet everybody means a dog.
