Why do guys like banter so much?

what do guys like banter with girls. I have always wondered do they mean what they say or is it purely for a laugh?

You have to be more specific. I'm not sure what you mean by banter.

If you mean teasing then usually its a sign of flirting. Girls do that as well.

If you mean straight up arguing, then that's another story, in which case I would say your statement is generalized and inaccurate. I'm a guy and I hate arguing with a passion. Debating I like, as in discussing some hot topic, but arguing over random things no.

When guys do it to other guys, its a way of showing social hierarchy. It's subconscious though. Most guys don't even realize they're doing it or know what their motive is. It's just a natural instinct. guys will tease, or playfully fight as a way of saying, I'm dominant over you and I'm the alpha male. It essentially a game of chicken to see who is going to give up first and give in to the dominance of the other person. Girls don't have this issue. This is why girls make friends super fast, and guys take longer to accept and trust a new guy. Girls don't have as much of a social hierarchy. From day one you are accepted into the ranks of the posse, with guys, you have to prove yourself, both that you are tough enough and like us, and that you can be trusted. Guys will keep close eye on new people and even tease them as a result to see how they will react. If they can hold there own, then they will garner more respect from the group as being a strong male.

Its a lot of fun having banter with girls, sometimes i think they take it half seriously though the other times they crack up laughing even more than me

It is very annoying. I experience it quite often. Most guys just do it to get a rise out of you. Sometimes they may even like you. If you look like the sensitive type than they will target you. But I assume it's just a guys way of showing that your his pal. After all Guys love to tease each other. Point blacnk son't let them get to you. They are just being immature.
