Then today, another member of staff (male) came in and started swearing, then looked at me and instantly apologized.
My brother said he was told that it's rude to swear in front of ladies.
Why is this? Is there a reason or is it just etiquette?
Yeah. Old school etiquette. When a guy is in a lady's presence the bufoonery and tomfoolery must be abandoned for more gentlemanly behavior . Apparently there are even laws which govern this behavior.
QA: does it bother you that men stop swearing around you? If so, why?
its just a backhanded way of saying women shouldn't swear. or rather women who swear don't deserve respect.
O didn't know that. I swear in front of both sexes all the time. Am I rude then?

It's just a gentlemanly gesture that men are supposed to do for women that they feel are deserving of being treated with respect. I don't know about men everywhere but trying to gentleman is still pretty important where I live.
So are you saying that you want men to stop respecting women? I don't see what your point is. It's men's way of saying that we RESPECT women. Respect is about acknowledging that the person DESERVES to be treated well. Just like there's a certain level of respect that comes from being a man in society, there's a certain level of respect that comes with being a women and this how they show they appreciate that. You don't want men to treat women well?
Because that's basic politeness... and you know - manners are something what my generation severely lacks.
It's an old part of chivalry.
i don't get it either
