Why are VW Golf so popular?

The Golf is the ultimate "classless" car. It's cheap enough that anyone can afford one, but has an image of quality, comfort and style that makes it popular with the wealthy as well, and then there's the "hot" GTi (okay, it's only lukewarm these days, but the earlier generations were very good) for the boy racers. It's a subtly good looking car, with a strong reputation, which makes it almost the default choice for people who don't know anything about cars. It also holds its value incredibly well.

I wouldn't buy a GTi, because if you want sporty, there are much better options (not a Subaru) - but for a normal everyday car, normal Golfs are actually a *far* better choice than any of the options you listed. Most people don't want some chavvy Subaru with sky-high insurance (because they're only owned by chavs who can't drive) .

And like others say, calling it a "Hitler-mobile" is retarded - especially when you go on to recommend other German and Japanese cars (I guess Subarus are "Hirohito-mobiles", are they?).

everyday car - a camry or accord is far more practical. Subaru are good for areas with rough weather or if you want some awd in general.

That would be fine if you were talking about the Beetle, but the Golf didn't come out until the mid '70s. Subaru started out as a manufacturer of military aircraft (incl. the Japanese navy's main torpedo bomber in WW2) before going on to make cars; BMW started out making military aircraft engines (incl. for the Messerschmitt 109); Mitsubishi built the infamous "Zero" - the thing is, no one cares.

Camrys etc are big, uneconomical and unrefined, and have cheap interiors and a bland image.

Sure, BMW was also the make of the first Jet engine...the ones used in Worlds Germany's first jet fighters. However most of these auto/airplane companies were already established and the respective countries asked/ordered them to create heavy machinery for war use.

I have spite for the car because The reason I asked this question is because I see that car everywhere but more so among teens lately.

The issue is that these teens typically look like the kind who are upto no good and/or are a bunch of drug dealers. It is almost a part of their fashion statement...which I strongly despise.

I really do like the current GTI however...I am telling my brother to get it.

You are right VW is a classless vehicle. On a side note, Toyota and Honda could also be a classless brand if they changed their lineup a bit. What do you think?

VW is not a classless brand - only the Golf, Beetle and Camper could be considered classless (non-VW examples would include the Mini and Fiat 500).

The Toyota Prius is probably the closest any Japanese car gets, as it's a relatively cheap and practical car that the rich still buy for its green credentials, but it still doesn't really have wide enough appeal to be considered classless.

Golfs are not just driven by drug dealers, but by people from all walks of life - that's what makes it classless

Oh I see what you mean now. Well to me hyundai, suzuki, kia etc = low income brands. Toyota, Honda, Ford etc = middle income brands and BMW, Benz, Cadillac = Rich brands,

However cars like the Toyota Landcruiser are not light on the wallet and is one of the finest vehicles around. VW, too has /had a lineup that reached the 45k+. Also, I feel both brands could make luxury vehicles and slap on their toyota/vw badges on them and they would not look bad. That is how I was judging them.

b) it's just horrible

c) germans don't like hitler. just because he was german doesn't mean all german people and things are bad.

d) german cars and machines tend to be of very good quality. Don't judge a book by it's cover.

Just so you know, my fav. brand is BMW. But VW literally was a product of Hitler and Nazi regime.

and maybe it had a bad history! but that doesn't mean it's a bad car! Wars tend to be the best for new inventions, that's just a product of a war.. Always look on the positive side of bad things.

not all teens who look like they're "up to no good" are actually up to no good! Not all teens who use those cars are drug dealers! And unless your parents are extremely rich, or your great aunt died and left you her fortune, you're not going to go buy an expensive car. Teens don't need ferraris or cars that cost a lot of money. It's probably their first car for gods sake. They need something reliable, lightweight and inexpensive. You're so judgemental!

Idk...I have seen some NASTY kids in my time. Drug dealers are angels before them. Maybe I am judgmental when it comes to them...I am glad I am.

Reliable, lightweight and inexpensive = toyota, honda, suzuki & hyundai. vw teen/20+ year oldd driver have at least somewhat of an ego. Most seem to be the die-hard party type.
