What is a "Hopeful kind of sad"?

There is a quote from the book, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and it goes "She wasn't bitter. She was sad though. But it was a hopeful kind of sad. The kind of sad that just takes time."

What does a "hopeful kind of sad" mean?

Probably just like saying optimism... Like she's upset but she still feels like things could change for the better soon. I don't really like a lot of modern books because they try way too hard with descriptions and it bores me to read two pagers about a character.

Did she share it with you personally or just post it? If she just posted it, I wouldn't think too deeply on it. If you've made it six weeks, start thinking about moving on, perhaps?

Well we actually broke up in November and came close to getting back together. She was very depressed about everything and was/is unhappy with herself. In late March she told me she didn't want to talk anymore. She actually first posted this quote on Pinterest in November after we broke up. She just reposted it onto Facebook the other day, along with another quote about leaving someone hanging. I think she's still trying to figure herself out.. I hope..
