Why do people assume I have a boyfriend?

Whenever someone asks me if I have a boyfriend & I tell them I don't they are shocked and think I'm not telling the truth or that I'm dating mutiple guys. And in no way do I dress in a provacative way.

I think its socially polite to react that way if you ask a girl such a personal question and the answer is no.

What else are they going to say? "I'm sorry?" or, "You into girls then?" or "Bad luck?" etc..?

Being surprised just seems to be the best and most appropriate thing to say.

That being said, if people are checking whether or not you have a boyfriend (especially guys), then there is probably some interest there, which might explain all the "you are probably pretty" answers, and indeed, there has got to be at least something about you to cause them to ask so maybe you are.

So if so many people are asking, why don't you have a boyfriend yet? :) LOL =-)

They find you attractive, even if they might not be attracted to you. I'm surprised if I see a woman who is really cool and yet doesn't have a boyfriend. See it as a compliment.

I don't think that they assume you're easy or that you're a "serial dater." I would think that they think that you just spend time with a lot of guys and won't "settle" - but that you are attractive, so you go out with different guys a lot. Think of it as a way of them saying that you must be popular because of positive things.

They probably see a lot of good qualities in you. Friendly / kind, attractive, loving, etc... so when they hear that you aren't dating anyone, they're surprised that apparently no one's found you and seen the same qualities that everyone else sees in you.

I get this same stuff from women like 10-20 years older then me or more recently I've been getting asked if I'm married or have kids now.. Sometimes I won't lie it get's irritating having people ask me do you have a girlfriend yet or if they feel bold enough they sometimes ask why

Yeah, I imagine there's a variety of explanations or intentions...

-People are nosy

-Closer friends or family might be genuinely concerned / looking out for your best interests

-Some people just have expectations about things and it's odd to them when other people around them don't conform to those expectations

-Could just be casual conversation / people don't realize that these questions bother you

I get that all the time too! its b'c we are sexy and yeah a lot of guys would be shocked to see how we DONT have a man..consider it a compliment but yeah it gets annoying hearing it all the time I agree

There are a few options:

1 - they think you're attractive and imagine you would have a boyfriend so they are expressing genuine surprise

2 - its a way of flattery, fake surprise in order to give the impressions mentioned in #1 in an indirect method

3 - they see how you dress and imagine that because you're not crazy and slutty then you must be tied dow

The older a woman is the more likely she's got a partner.

The the fatter and older a woman looks the more likely she's been through with pregnancy and the stress of raising children.

If you are a nice person, fun to be with, attractive, nice smile, good personality etc, then people might assume you have a Boyfriend because that's wht everyone is looking for in the other persn.

either because they think you are very attractive or they want you to think that you are highly desirable. it tends to be a flirting technique or something people will do before asking you out.

Most guys, including myself, will automatically assume that attractive girls are taken. The way you dress has nothing to do with it. Definitely take it as a compliment.
