When did "booty shorts" as outerwear become popular for girls to wear?

I'm talking about the extremely short ones that fit similar to the underwear where they are really tight and kind of ride up the girl's thigh on the side just at butt level and are even shorter on the sides.

For some reason I just started noticing the difference between girls wearing just the really short leg ones and the ones like this that kind of ride up their thigh. If you think about it, they kind of just look like underwear posing as jeans.

I figure they've probably been around since Dukes of Hazard, but when did these start becoming a common fashion trend for girls? I know it's a weird question, but I always wonder weird stuff like that. I don't remember noticing the difference much.

Also girls, which kind do you wear when you go out? The regular short shorts, or more of the booty short style?

I'm not sure, but I'm literally embarrassed for them sometimes, haha! They don't look good, to me, even on beautiful bodies. They look ridiculous, like she's trying too hard.

I'd never be caught ANYWHERE in those, even at home. If I want to run around in my underwear, I do that, haha!
