Why do some guys try to act tough in front of their girlfriends?

I'm probably gonna be called the bad guy for this. But my uncle passed away and I was in a very mood. I'm shy, but I won't take any mistreatment from any man or woman.

This athlete at my college who is known to be an ass started harrassing me with his girlfriend watching. She told him to leave me alone.

At first, I ignored him, but I noticed he was becoming very aggressive. He then crossed a line. He took my glasses off and threw them on the floor. I had enough, I punched him the face very hard. He was shocked.

Why do some guys with girlfriends act this way?

I'm thinking it's a primal instinct. Male horses fight against each other over a female. The female then mates with the winner (the stronger male).

He is showing off to his girlfriend that he is strong by bullying you, someone who he sees as weaker than him. I'm sure guys like that actually have lots of insecurities, and to keep their girls interested in them, they feel like they need to prove something. So, to cover up this insecurity and to prove to his girls and himself that he is worth dating, he picks on another guy who he thinks is inferior to him. To prove his point that he is better than you.

To your question, Idunno I feel that those guys are just immature and need to grow up a little.

But, for those immature ones, they want to act all big and bad because they think the girl will like them even more. For a woman of my standards, I find that a HUGE turn off.

If I had a girlfriend, I would treat her good always. If my friends were mean to her, I would check them.

To show that he's not weak. I see it all the time when I jog, guys yell at me from their cars with their girlfriends riding in the passenger seat. Or when I need to get by and say "excuse me", the guy is too tough/cool to say anything and the girlfriend ends up apologizing for him. 90% of the time it is acting tough, not actually being tough. It seems more badass to intimidate without lifting a finger and since most people don't want conflict or are all talk anyway, it works more often than not.
