What is Othello Syndrome?
The name comes from Shakespeare’s play Othello, in which the main character is led to believe that his wife is unfaithful, leading to tragedy. In real life, Othello Syndrome can wreak havoc on relationships.
Jealousy is a normal emotion in relationships. However, sometimes it can go too far and become an obsession. This is known as Othello Syndrome, and is a condition in which a person becomes convinced that their partner is cheating on them, even when there is no evidence to support it.
Why Does It Happen?
Othello Syndrome is not just about jealousy; it is often linked to deeper issues such as insecurity, low self-esteem or mental health issues. It can also be linked to conditions such as anxiety, paranoia or even brain injuries.
How to Cope with It?
If you think your partner has Othello Syndrome, it’s important to set boundaries and encourage them to seek professional help. Therapy can help them understand their feelings and learn to trust again. It’s okay to protect yourself and walk away if the situation doesn’t feel safe.
