In general, why are men MUCH more possessive than women?

I've always wondered why men are usually much more possessive about their girlfriends, than women about their boyfriends. Women usually don't mind their boyfriends interacting with other women, unless they get strong signs that the man may be going overboard. But in case of men, they freak out and push the panic button even if their girlfriend casually talks with other men.

As per my analysis, its got to do with the fact that in genera, its MUCH easier for a woman to find a boyfriend, than a man to find a girlfriend (because the man is always supposed to make the first move). Due to this, women aren't all that worried of their boyfriend cheating on them or dumping the, unless they are reasonably sure of the man actually going overboard. But in case of a man, if his girlfriend dumps him for another guy, he'll have to go through all the hard work again until he finds himself someone else (which obviously involves several rejections along the way).
So men try too hard to hold on to the women whose hearts they have won with so much of hard work and efforts. This obviously makes them possessive and hold on to their girlfriends like leeches. but as for women, they'd have men asking them out within days of a breakup, so its not really a big deal of them. Hence there's not really a need for them to be too possessive about their boyfriends.

So what do you people feel about this? Looking for some insightful opinions here, so please refrain from any kind of flaming or sarcasm.

P. S. This question is only with respect to men and women who are in serious relationships, or at least considering that. In other words, the question isn't applicable to people who are into one night stands, friends with benefits, or if they just started dating.
