I don't want to ruin our friendship line really a valid excuse? I don't think many people retain most of their opposite sex friendships after they enter a serious relationship. Not always true but a lot of partners won't understand a closer relationship with a member of the opposite sex. So is it a valid excuse? I don't want to ruin our friendship"

I think friendships are so flaky these days. They come and go depending on the convenience and then when they move away - see you in the next life. So, if you don't want to ruin the friendship, then that's like thinking the friendship will last forever, when in reality, it rarely does and people know this, but it could if you lived back in the 18th century when people were more genuine. So, basically they are lying and just want your relationship to flake away and become some passive thing where they call once a year on Christmas or every decade.

It is not a valid excuse. If one person is into another romantically, the friendship is already ruined.
