Why do people break up and get back together?

Personally, I've never understood those couples who break up and get back together, especially if it happens more than once. Like, obviously you guys don't work well together, why do you continue to assume it'll be different this time?

I believe that once you're broken up, you're broken up. If you couldn't make it work before, you're not going to make it work the next time, because whatever caused the break up is going to crop up again. If trust was broken, it's never really repaired. If your values don't align, that's always going to be a problem. If you have different conflict management strategies, that's not gonna go away.

I don't quite understand it either. I've done it a few times and it never works out. It always seems like a great idea at the time, but the old shit just creeps back in creating too much tension.

If both people are fully willing and committed to admitting their faults, forgiving the other, and working on the relationship 100 percent there is a chance it can work, but it is so rare when that happens. One always feels like the other did more, or worse, so they tend to hold resentment and expect the other to "move mountains" for them. the other tends to go along with that at first, before the initial glow of the getting back together wears off.. But once it does they remember all the problems in the relationship weren't their fault thus creating new resentment towards their partner.

Personally I prefer to take past relationships as learning experiences as what not to do/ take from the next person I'm with... Thus being a better person to them. And I can only hope they are the same way. There are too many people in the world still pining over an ex and it's just pathetic.

Sometimes it's hard to let a person go, it's a drastic change to anyones lives when you go from having someone you talk to everyday, can confide in and trust to not having them in your life at all. Personally I have done the whole break up and get back together but once it exceeds the 2nd time, I don't see a point, then there's genuinely a reason why we didn't work out and I won't put effort into something that is broken.

Some people want the love they had you know...

Some people realize what they've done wrong and what they've thrown away you know...

There are a lot of re-conciliated couples that are stable now you know...

There are different reason as to why people break up and not all of them have done permanent damage you know...

I'm sure there are the odd couple out there who it actually works out in the long run, but for the most part, I think that it's usually not worth it. Personally, I'd rather try to start fresh with someone new than try to "start fresh" with an ex, because it's never really "fresh" is it?

Even if a person has changed, the memory of what they did will always be there. It's never a fresh start. The baggage from the failed relationship will always be there in the back of both your minds.

Well you've got a good point there really but sometimes I feel that a break up might make both of them realise where they went wrong and be able to work on it in the future and be able to make themselves stronger maybe

May me they Realize what was their fault in their past, and learn a lot from them and again decided to get back after brreak up. Mistake happens in life so one should give a chance. There are people in this world who will never left you again. Believe In God.

I actually have zero clue. If I broke up with someone, I'd have a pretty damn good reason. And would not want to look back.
