Why does my girlfriend think she's entitled to some of my inheritance?

So, my grandmother passed away last year, and only now has the estate been sorted (A few things had to be investigated).

Anyway, her son, my father, was / is an only child, as am I, so we both inherited quite a large sum of money.

I will be buying a house with mine, and paying off any remaining debts, which will use up about 95% of the money I am earning.

Now, my girlfriend of less than 6 months is asking me how much she's going to get. I told her she's not, I have already earmarked this money to set up my future, and she's pretty pissed off, saying that she thought we were a couple, and what's mine is hers etc.

Is she being unreasonable?

I had actually planned on using some of the money to take us both away on a surprise trip, but now that she's pulling this crap, I don't really want to.

Where I live, a way around that problem is to create a family trust and give the trust ownership of the property.
Trusts have nominated beneficiaries and an administrator. You can be both.
By the strict letter of the law, you would not own anything. The court cannot take from you what you do not own.
I assume that where you live there is probably a similar legal device that can be used to protect your assets.
Do not tell any woman about this.
Let her discover it after she leaves you and tries to take the house. :-)

I'd take this as a warning sign buddy... She feels entitled at this stage of the game, just think what would happen 1 or 3 years in, or god forbid you get married? Wheewwie, that would be a nasty divorce!

Tell her she's not getting ANYTHING, and that she should consider herself lucky that you're going to be able to have her come over to YOUR house and watch YOUR TV, and maybe you'll take her out to a nice dinner or something.

She's being manipulative. So yes, very irrational and unreasonable. She should've just been happy for you, and maybe congratulate you if it was appropriate. That's it, end of discussion.

What she's doing, it's like your parents helping you out with some money, and her thinking she's entitled to it too!

I'm sorry, but if I were you, I'd feel the same way, and I'd seriously reconsider staying with her. So, in the least, I'd discuss it with her when I've cooled down and calmly talk about my discomfort with her approach. See how she responds to that gentle, but direct, confrontation of the matter, and see where that leads us and how she behaves afterwards.

She is showing her true colours. She isn't your wife and she is not entitled to any amount of money from you. Even if you were married, it's still your money. If she was not named as a beneficiary in the will, she isn't getting anything. She sees dollar signs with you, so it's clear where her priorities are. She's being completely unreasonable.

I am coming from a similar situation. I inherited my grandmothers house, which live in currently with my husband. He felt that his name should be put on the deed also. My answer was absolutely not. If your family worked hard to be able to offer you a inheritance then you should be the only one to benefit. I do understand what's mine is yours, but your doing something smart with the $. She should be able to see she will benefit in the long run from you being able to buy her a place to live.

She's crazy... Why does she think she gets money. Even if you're married. Your spouse should respect your wishes on what you want to do with it. It's YOUR inheritance. If I was married, I would never expect to get money from an inheritance from my wife. Yes I have a right to it legally, but morally no. I did nothing to get it.

Just think that inheritance you have now, when you marry... have of that becomes your wives if she divorced you

No you are not being unreasonable. One time large shots of money need to be invested not squandered. Buying a house and paying off debt sound like the perfect choice. And, no. she isn't "entitled" to anything that belongs to you, and I would definitely take it as a red flag about your future relationship.
