Why does my girlfriend think she's entitled to some of my inheritance?

So, my grandmother passed away last year, and only now has the estate been sorted (A few things had to be investigated).

Anyway, her son, my father, was / is an only child, as am I, so we both inherited quite a large sum of money.

I will be buying a house with mine, and paying off any remaining debts, which will use up about 95% of the money I am earning.

Now, my girlfriend of less than 6 months is asking me how much she's going to get. I told her she's not, I have already earmarked this money to set up my future, and she's pretty pissed off, saying that she thought we were a couple, and what's mine is hers etc.

Is she being unreasonable?

I had actually planned on using some of the money to take us both away on a surprise trip, but now that she's pulling this crap, I don't really want to.

By the strict letter of the law, you would not own anything. The court cannot take from you what you do not own.
I assume that where you live there is probably a similar legal device that can be used to protect your assets.
Do not tell any woman about this.
Let her discover it after she leaves you and tries to take the house. :-)

I'm sorry, but if I were you, I'd feel the same way, and I'd seriously reconsider staying with her. So, in the least, I'd discuss it with her when I've cooled down and calmly talk about my discomfort with her approach. See how she responds to that gentle, but direct, confrontation of the matter, and see where that leads us and how she behaves afterwards.

I am coming from a similar situation. I inherited my grandmothers house, which live in currently with my husband. He felt that his name should be put on the deed also. My answer was absolutely not. If your family worked hard to be able to offer you a inheritance then you should be the only one to benefit. I do understand what's mine is yours, but your doing something smart with the $. If I was married, I would never expect to get money from an inheritance from my wife. Yes I have a right to it legally, but morally no. I did nothing to get it.
