How should I feel/ react if a guy calls me his escape?

He has a stressful job, ex who is still calling him and he some family problems I'm not too familiar with.
We started off as friends but lately he has been telling me that he has fallen for me and that I'm his escape.
Is he just using me? How do I know if his feelings for me a genuine?
