Girls, My boyfriend took his ex to prom?

Okayy.
So I'm in a long distance relationship and I've never met my boyfriend (yet). I found out a few days ago that he took his ex to prom without telling me (she put photos up on instagram) and when I confronted him he said he never thought twice about it. I got a good explanation as to why he did including his mum wanting him to go to prom and him and his ex's family being so close, they've known each other since they were children. I'm just still not sure, is it a big deal?

Of course its a big deal, has he mentioned anything about him and his ex being good friends or anything? Its odd to me , why bring an ex to prom when you have a girlfriend , and then not tell your girlfriend either. its more odd that he didn't tell you and you had to find out through Instagram

when I first met him he and his ex were still dating and we were just friends. We didn't start talking properly until they split. Apparently it was a mutual decision however she had already bought the dress before they split so he told her if she couldn't find anyone to take her, he would. I just don't know what to believe.
