I see your post was a month ago, but I would like to reply in case you read this.
Your boyfriend may simply never have been taught how rude it is to take food from somebody else's plate, especially without asking. I know in my family we grab samples while the food is being cooked just to check "doneness". This drives my husband up the wall, compelling him once to jokingly threaten to stab me with the meat fork. It is just a difference in upbringing. This type of behavior does not bother me.
What I am concerned about is the message your boyfriend is sending to you. Taking food from somebody else's plate, especially regularly and without permission, may be a way for him to attempt to establish dominance over you. It seems to me that his behavior is successful, too, as you are excusing it ("...I guess it's technically his food..."). Another dominance scene may be taking place as he positions himself as the primary bread winner ("he always insists on paying for my meal even when I try to...").
He may be rude and not be aware of it, or he may have an abusive personality hidden under the surface. Abuse starts slowly with subtle cues. If you feel uncomfortable around him or notice other warning signs, I recommend you distance yourself from him as quickly as you can. In other words, run away fast if you're uncomfortable.
And, by the way, when somebody buys you a meal, it is YOUR food. The food is a gift, just as if he were to buy you a rose or a bracelet. You would not expect him to take the rose home with him or to wear the bracelet. Why would you accept him eating the dinner he bought you?
Hes hungry, and besides he pays for it so what's the problem... maybe order an extra bone for him so he can chew on it and maybe you need to eat faster...or bitch slap him and tell him its inappropriate...

Yeah that is definitely rude, you should talk to him about it. Tell him what you feel. Communication is important in relationships
Perhaps he has tape worms.
I think maybe he should order 2 meals for himself.
