Do you believe that people who put on a strong emotional outwards appearance are actually incredibly soft/sensitive on the inside?

My cousin is like this. She is friendly & outgoing with an unshakeable "rock" solid (as in nothing appears to rattle, upset her, etc.) personality to most people. But she's actually quite sensitive regarding the behavior of friends/family (e. g. she may not burst into tears right then but I've caught her crying at the computer).
