This is obviously a big generalization but I just feel like there's some truth to it. I personally have never used it in my relationships but I usually only get into them if I'm looking for something pretty serious.
The use of "babe" was mocked in the Office episode "Dinner Party" where Michael and Jan were using it in a really over-the-top manner. Later in the episode Jim and Pam call each other babe ironically in a sarcastic way. The writers are intentionally or unintentionally associating people who use "babe" to be in dysfunctional relationships and those who don't in more stable ones.
That episode didn't create my opinion on this topic but it certainly added to my suspicion. In my opinion if you want to be in a committed loving relationship then respecting each other enough to use your real names most of the time is crucial for it to be successful. I feel like "babe" is appropriate for a one night stand but that's about it.
