What I'm thinking about in saying it's painful is my grandfathers, both of whom were married for over fifty years, but lost their wives to terminal illnesses. Neither one of them lasted very long after my grandmothers died. Techincally they died of a stroke and a heart attack respectively, but it was really loneliness that killed them. It's hard to imagine how much you'd love someone after 50 years. Most of us haven't even been alive that long. When I think of true love, I always think of old people that have been together for decades. I know it exists in other forms with young people and all, but a fifty year commitment says a lot. Anyway, just wanted to explain that comment.

That's interesting, my parents divorced, got remarried. Dad's marriage was rocky at best and mom's is passable. Of course you learn what mistakes not to do from your parents. I have other family members been married for 30+yrs and grandparents have been married for 60 years I think. That's why I put selfishness can not happen. From any person. The hard part is finding someone who is not selfish and has strong attraction for each other. That will take some effort like teenagers at the age of 60+
