Why would guy send I love you text and then say it was for a family member which was a lie because he called her babe?

I answered was that for me and then he said it was for a family member. He never sent wrong text before. Could he be testing my reaction?

And he never did this before in the years I dated him in and off so seems there's a reason

Could he? Yes he could but I doubt that's what's happening. What does he gain by learning that reaction? My question is do you think he has feelings for you?
