Nowadays, it'd have to be something small, as I don't have the space I did growing up, and probably something more laid-back and less energetic than the labs and mutts I grew up with. I loved them all, but I just don't have what I used to. It WOULD be hilarious to parodize Paris Hilton and walk around with a backpack containing, say, a Saint Bernard, but it'd be cruel to the dog (and even I could only keep that up so long).
People think of small, lower-energy dogs, and they tend to think of pugs, or French bulldogs, but I have some issues with brachycephalic animals- breeding something that's going to suffer for traits you deliberately breed in doesn't sit right with me. Maybe a King Charles Spaniel; they tend to be healthier. Or maybe a miniature schnauzer- I could sit around and try to catch it schnauzing, so I could figure out what the hell that actually IS.
I don't have the kind of free time it would take to have any of those working dogs - they need to have excellent training and constant activity - they're bred to work, and if you aren't working them, they can be both destructive and dangerous. None of them would really be good a family pets, except maybe the Dutch Shephard.
I'm a fan of the Malinois, but since building a 20' fence is impractical and illegal in the suburbs, I wouldn't want to have to try to keep one in the yard. They're my favorite working dog, though. But instead, I have a rescue from China, that would have otherwise been on the lunch menu.

She's medium-sized, incredibly smart, has excellent situation awareness (she was a street dog in China), and she's extremely protective. You couldn't ask for a better guard dog or hunter.
@Neosporin Obviously all Chinese people don't eat dogs, but they absolutely eat dogs in rural areas of China, which is where this rescue organization goes to rescue dogs. This isn't exactly a secret - you can see plenty of videos on YouTube. While there's a lot of money on the coastal cities in China, if you go inland, it's a very different world.
I already have my favourite, a Pomeranian. I have always wanted a sausage dog, a pug, a chihuahua, a husky, I just want one of each to be honest. Dogs are the best things out there! 😌
My sister has a pug. Very cute and entertaining. I personally enjoy larger and more active dogs.
I have seen Pomeranians, but like I said I prefer bigger dogs. The dobermans I grew up with were trained in Schutzhund. Loyal, fun and family friendly if socialized properly, and great protectors.
Small dogs are not bad at all and better depending on lifestyle and living conditions. Honestly small dog would be a better choice since I live in an apartment, but like I said prefer bigger dogs more.
I still miss our Border Collie, Meg. The whole family would love another, but it would be unfair on our cat, Charley Farley, who came to live with us after we lost Meg.

I like mine the way they are:
Agile/energetic; outdoors minded; street smart; non-aggressive; happy with the cat around.
From the appearance:
... dog like (meaning, NOT like a sausage, a rat, a wrinkly old cushion, a couch toy, and such) not too big, and not too small.
I'm not into ''pure breeds''.
Alternatively, I might also be happy with a retriever, pointer, or beagle.

@Neosporin You have a right to see it like this.
Indeed, I don't limit myself to like one species only.
Especially in the mornings, it is true that the cat does not surprise me with a degree of front yard disorder, or a greeting that may cost me my balance :)
Rotties are the biggest babies, lol !
Definitely can be. You see what dobermans can be like?
Ah, I got you. I grew up with 4 dobermans. Very vocal and velcro dogs, but very entertaining and funny. Videos on YouTube had me nodding at what I saw since I experienced it firsthand
Yes, I love dogs and I would love a Labrador. I'll be safe if a guy has a dog as a pet.
