How can a woman have so much power over a man?

I'll give you a brief example:
I know of a story from my workplace. It happened to a guy many knew; decent fellow. He fell in love, went against his mother whom never liked the girlfriend and it got to the point the girl made him rob a store, steal drugs and punch a homeless guy a couple times. She was the mastermind (the manipulator) and he was just following through, saying yes to everything.

Then after serving his 3 year sentence (prior to that he never got in trouble with the law ever), he found out he's not the father of their 6 year-old son, she cheated the whole time, she tried to falsely accused another man of sexual assault (by hitting herself and ripping her clothes; luckily it didn't work), she only mimics emotions and other things. She admitted to using people since she was a kid and never feeling any guilt nor remorse; a pure psychopath.

Even though he started out as a normal, gentleman... how on earth did he not notice the red flags? How can a woman have that much power over the man... enough to literally make him break the law?

Last thing I've heard, the guy has been on good behavior since but is ruined permanently emotionally and psychological. Those that know him are still left wondering what on earth he saw in her.

It does boggle the mind. Sometimes a guy can fall in love with somebody and put up with a lot of crap and than go back for more. I used to laugh at guys that would stay with somebody hoping she would change. Then it happened to me and now I understand it.

The sad part to the story is till this day he still thinks about that boy he thought was his. He found it sad to say goodbye to him. The boy used to call him daddy.

He couldn't do nothing once the biological father (she purposely never informed the bio dad; she wanted the boyfriend to continue raising the child) got involved and started fighting for custody. Cruel woman for sure.

Usually it starts with very small things. Then it gets bigger by small increments that you don't notice how much you changed from before. It's like how your relatives that see you ever few years see huge changes, while you and your family that sees you almost every day doesn't.

And if she had little to no empathy at all for anyone (that girl has been lying and manipulating people since her childhood years) and isn't capable of loving then I'm assuming it must be an easy job for her to get gullible men.

Yeah, I was in a relationship like that before. I loved her, I trusted her completely, I worshipped the ground she walked on and I would've died for her.
Later I found out that she maxed out a bunch of credit cards, took out loans and put us in debt.
She told a bunch of people lies about me and she cheated on me with like 3 different guys at least.
I was so shocked that I wanted to kill myself.
Women like the one in your story definitely exist and they can easily manipulate loving, trusting guys.

Unbelievable there can be evil people like those witches out there. I used to always think female psychopaths or narcisssists were much lesser than males. Nope. They're just more subtle, go undetected (can fear emotions and tears) and I'm guessing if I were to include the ones not arrested but scamming/using people, their numbers seem on an even ratio.

It's definitely scary, it kind of scars you. Like you said, your friend ended up ruined emotionally and psychologically.
There's really no limit to what a woman like that will do. Then there's the weird longing for her, and wanting her love and approval still. She treats you like garbage, but you loved her and it's very difficult to fix yourself. You can't let her go.
It's truly traumatizing and I know I have some form of PTSD since that relationship.
She could still control me if she wanted to.
It's really sad that there's people like that out there. They're very hurtful and they couldn't care less.
