A fascinating question.

First blush... love is positive energy and provides for growth... security, trust, support... for our loved ones, those around us, our community. It is something given, felt or a choice. Giving in return feeds something deeper in ourselves that makes us feel good. It's not just receiving, we certainly want to receive or else can feel empty.

A built in reward... maybe it's rooted in survival and propagation for every species has their way of caring for their young, ensuring survival. For humans, it's a sense of security that gives to another.

Love is a priority, submission to another.

I don't think we always put in more energy, it depends. I don't think it's a losing proposition, but it can be when given to those whom don't value, appreciate, or reciprocate. That may be rooted in the love givers flaws as well as the receiver.

I've poured myself into a prior woman for a long time, over a decade... while she dated other guys. I started to date others, I still would give as I'd put her and her kids into a category in my brain so I'd avoid suffering the loss. But that screwed me out of having a really good intimate partner of my own. That's like the definition of an idiot. It felt good, but got nothing for it.

That's not all unlike loving some homeless person that throws away everything I give them of value. The receiver matters. I gotta wonder what J. of Nazareth felt for he didn't get so much back other than doubt, at least immediately.

I have a girlfriend and intimate partner now whom I give love... priority, physical, patience, kindness, respond to, flowers, etc. and I receive touch, sex, consideration, surprises, etc..

I'll let you decide... I think if you embark on any endeavor thinking "you're gonna lose", there is something amis inside of you, for it is is the minds perception that is casting the shadow on the first step.

Couple reasons sex is one someone to help pay the bills is another I think it's boring being by yourself all the time I did that for a while and don't think it was really worth it in the end

I don't agree with your premise, in terms of energy. For example, say you meet your true love at 18, and get married that very year. You've got about 60 years left with the person. So, between the 2 of you, that's 120 years of energy, right? Now lets say you have 3 kids together. They will also live to about 78. That's 210 years of energy.

Another issue is that the energy you speak of isn't a constant thing. You're going to get sick. You're going to get stressed. You're going to get overwhelmed. When that happens, having someone who can get you off your knees and help you move forward is invaluable.

Your question is flawed. What is "losing" to you? Putting more energy into it than getting out of it? That is circumstantial... and usually that isn't even love, its just stupid.
