Am I wrong? My boyfriend got mad that I didn’t buy him a Nintendo switch for Christmas?

The conversation began because I told him that I wanted to buy a Nintendo switch for myself since I could receive a 25% discount. He then said that I should buy it for him for Christmas. He continuously tried to get me to say a definite yes Even after I said maybe. He asked me why maybe I then replied with a list of things that I need to do such as pay my speeding ticket and get my mom a laptop along with the rest of my families gifts. He stated that he would put 100 towards the switch. I proceeded to ask him what he would get me and he said jewelry from James Avery for $60.
I told him the value of those gifts were vastly different and reiterated that I wanted the switch for myself. He then told me that he did not want to exchange gifts anymore with someone who is focused on the value. We were supposed to go on a trip to Dallas the next day but he had an attitude with me about the gift so I canceled. I asked if we could go another time but he said he was going to be busy with work until after Christmas. I was supposed to be seeing my family and was really excited to go to Dallas and I felt like he did not care so I broke up with him. He still has not apologize but he said that no one else would love me as much as he did. I feel really hurt that he cannot seem to take accountability. We could have gotten past this if he was able to be vulnerable & understand a different perspective from his own.

I do not think you can “demand” a gift. That makes it compulsory, not a gift. A gift is freely given. That was way too entitled & aggressive I’d have dumped him just for how annoying he was but certainly the rest was concerning to me. I don’t think the fact the prices were diff is generally an issue but I didn’t get the impression you were bothered by tuat in itself, he was so weasely the way he went about it all, I can understand you pointing it out as an illustration. I don’t think you seemed good diggeerish. I think you great not take him back. Then you will both be pathetic. He seems to be the sort to drag people down. Exactly!!! It was the way he went about it & expected an explanation after I said maybe. He probably would’ve gotten it if it weren’t for that. I’ve never experienced that before. I know that I would be pathetic to go back but I have attachment issues. I’m really trying not to go back though. It sucks that this happened so close to Christmas & school is closed. It’s harder to distract myself.

Although I have NOTHING to prove to anyone. I assure you that I am very far from a gold digger. I was raised to be a very selfless z& self sacrificing person & it has hurt me a lot. I work & take care of myself bc I don’t want to have to rely on anyone else. I just didn’t want to be manipulated in this situation. Me buying myself a switch is only seen as selfish & being a gold digger bc he’s involved if he weren’t it would be perfectly fine for me to buy this for myself.

I did care for the relationship which is why I said maybe to the gift even though I wasn’t sure about it. The conversation was getting heated so I told him we should talk about it another time & he said he wouldn’t exchange gifts at all anymore “because I was focused on the value” supposedly & he had an attitude the next day about it when we were supposed to leave for our trip. I cared for it he only cared about control & manipulation to get what he wanted.

Don't get me wrong, he shouldn't get moody over a gift but if you're looking at such a relatively small price difference as being a big issue, and a trigger for these issues in your relationship then maybe it's not the right thing for you right now.

Yes, the value of the switch is $300 currently. With my discount & after his $100 contribution to his gift I would’ve only paid $100. The jewelry he wanted to get me was $60. So yes it’s a $40 difference

BUT I told him MAYBE several times. He should’ve accepted that instead of trying to manipulate & guilt trip me into saying yes. He most likely would’ve gotten it. Also we began the conversation because I said I wanted it for myself & he immediately made it about himself. That’s the only reason why I was focused on the value. Why would I get what he wants and accept something I don’t even want for way less value? I’m kind, but I refuse to be a doormat. He definitely would not have done that for me.
