When did communication become so lost? When effectual words is now but lost? When will we find it again the ability to communicate with each other? Deeper meanings which contain depth and personality. Expressing to share one's opinion potentially receiving knowledge and wisdom. So no one feels lost or forgotten and we pass down our knowledge. As social butterflies we wish to be, not neglected by the lack of socializing.
When did we lose the ability to socialize effectively?
I’ve always had anxiety. I’m shy, introverted and honestly, super awkward. I prefer reading books to spending my free time on social media. So you get the idea, I’m not exactly a social butterfly. Whenever I try to make friends, I end up embarrassing myself, or I quickly run out of topics to discuss with.
There are only a few people I “click” with, and I usually surround myself with like-minded people. I enjoy talking and sharing ideas once I get comfortable with them. You can’t always blame everything on technology, although, it does play a huge role in the fast decline of socialization. We are socializing, but in a different way. For example, you’re on GaG interacting with different GaG users, that is also socializing, but it’s different than the conventional one. Everything is digital these days instead of physical, face-to-face interaction.
In short, we are always communicating, but only the mode has changed. I understand why you prefer offline interactions though, it is much better.
Obvious answer would be technology but it is not just that I think people have always had a hard time socializing even way before this. Most of us have walls up and need to feel comfortable to let others in and that is a very difficult thing for people to do. I know personally I've always been shy/socially awkward cause Its impossible for me to let people into my life. It sucks being that way but there is nothing I can do about it since I'm not willing to risk letting people in that don't deserve it.
I have a different view on technology because it did establish some forms of communication. Like ldr, emergency situations, and connections from different cultures. The downside of technology seems to lie with the obsessive use of technology. I will expound further with my opinion in a update and most likely in someone's comment section for all to reply in response to my opinion. I feel yes, it is more than important to have set boundaries with information and sharing or answering anything that feels uncomfortable should not be shared. Yet, a lack of communication can lead to us considering a topic potentially awkward is only defining who we are as a person. Creating walls from all individuals can prevent the sharing of knowledge or viewing something differently. Leading us to feel the need to judge ourselves and cause us to no longer communicate or be true to who we are as individuals. Therefore, letting go any context of understanding and being unable to see an unfamiliar perspective.
Is this a rhetorical question? Verbal communication is a matter of syntax body language clarification and context. People have always come up short on effective, idiot proof communication with each other. Just look at the dashboard on someone's car how often do people ignore the idiot lights that tell you when something is wrong with the engine or the transmission do people automatically take their vehicle in for diagnostic analysis or do they tap the dash on the hopes that the light will go off and stop bothering them. When people start listening to their cars maybe they'll start listening to each other too. Maybe if we stop giving each other bad news all the time then we'll be more receptive to hearing what we're being told by others.
Well the obvious answer is the advent of smart phones and social media, but there's an argument to be made that portable entertainment methods even as simple as an ipod and headphones that allowed people to basically shut themselves off from the world even when out in public have certainly contributed too. I'd even make the argument that increasingly sheltering kids to the point they really only meet friends and interact with people at schools and nowhere else hasn't helped either.
I think lack of communication has always been a thing, but the manufacturing of making cell phones personalized and social media is exactly why people have strived to become even less good with communication than once before, even old people. I am a waitress and I can’t how many times I see people just face deep into their phones instead of just enjoying their guests company
Thank you for your shared experience. I agree with you, even when I am with my friends or family phones seems to provide more company than other human beings.
When my wife & I are at a restaurant we'll often point out to each other when we see a table with everyone in their phone. It's so sad. We never touch our phones when we're out except to look up something relevant or important.
I remember when I was younger - before cell phones - & sometimes I would watch an older couple sit down at a restaurant and never say a word the whole time. I always wondered why that was. Had they been together so long they ran out of things to talk about?
@HoraceB yep me and my boyfriend are the same way. He rarely use our cellphones. The only time he uses his phone is when 1. He is texting his business clients 2. He is trying to make me laugh with remixes he has made. I can’t count how many times I’ve been ignored by customers due to them being too intrigued by their phones and it’s to the point where people use their phone for creep reasons. Had a lady recording a bartender doing her job at my job without asking permission. As much as I do work at a tourist trap, I found it really creepy that the lady didn’t even ask permission
2007. That was the fourth year social media was a thing, the first year Facebook became national, and the first year of the everyday smartphone, Apple's iPhone. Social media killed social interaction and talking in real life. Now people are glued to their phones almost just like the lazy pigs for people shown in Wall-E.
The invention of social media, I would say specifically things like texting. In person is best but voice on phone is still pretty good but texting and slow responses and how things in writing (such as this) can be misunderstood very easily.
The internet allowed people to become trolls or not care what others think, they don't know who I am anyways.
The internet reminds me of screaming children in a stadium who are yelling cuss words cause no one knows who they are.
Cause = smart phones. Everyone needs instant and short communication. I dislike short talk. it makes me sound in ways I am not and often get taken the wrong way. The result of hard boiling down of once decent thoughts.
I dunno, but a lot of males at GaG don't think it is weird to complain about being outcasts, lonely, and ostracized when they don't have any social skills and think that it is perfectly normal not to work on being social.
When social media appeared! We are so used to sitting on our phones posting and liking things that we forget how to interact with another human being in person!
@OnKoing That's true! It's a double edged sword. You get those disrespectful people, but you get people who are genuinely trying to help and a stranger's opinion can sometimes be more convincing than one coming from loved ones when you're in doubt. That's why I'm starting to really like this place
I think Facebook anx Socail platforms need to be taken out and maybe cell phones jammed so u can’t text to get people back outside to the world because I’m totally lost and think I should go live in a cave somewhere
Somewhere being being bullied and ridiculed for being different and having our voices continually drowned out by (insults from) the conformists who only want to hear what is palatable to their own ears or what is politically correct.
My uncle calls social media "anti-social media". If you think about it, makes sense. Social media was generally created by people who found face to face interaction difficult.
well thanks for the pandemic and the fact we spend are our lives online more often than we talk to anyone in person i would say that we lost it ever since the internet.
Think about the way we communicate with each other with todays technology, Basically the iPhone, iPad, laptop and computer are our connection in socializing. People use to actually talk to each other, do things, play games, hangout at malls, parks, etc. with out using the above communication devices. And they actually had more enjoyment.
Parents who grasped the good and bad about the changes in technology and rise of new media have been able to guide their kids better as technology persists in it's continual growth. Technology is a tool. You can kill with a tool just as easily as build with it. Only thing society screwed themselves on was not giving proper knowledge on the devices so more people decided to opt to being afraid of them, or blaming the tech rather than the parents who's job is to guide and teach through life and time which requires understanding of new things invented.
