What does someone have to do to gain your trust?

Once trust is broken, there is no way to fully repair it.
To gain trust often takes time. The longer they go without treating you badly and not spreading your personal business with other people, they gain trust.

But for serious or complete trust, that isn't always possible. They have to happen to be around for certain situations, and how they handle those situations, and how they treat me at the time can increase trust, but not everybody will be around or have the opportunity to prove their trustworthiness like that.

no one thing will do it. it just plain takes time and life happening. it does however start with honesty. another component is her (gasp) not cheating. one thing not very likely to help her is her proclaiming for it. it's within actions and intetactions.

Honestly, I give a certain level of trust to begin with. Most people aren't going to take advantage of that or break my trust.

But if they do, regaining that trust is very hard.

If people want to be trusted by me, all they have to do would be to show me a consistent match between their words and actions. When their actions don't support their words, trust tends to disappear.

Nothing. They have it. Distrust is what someone earns. Trust is the default stance I take. Innocent until proven guilty, not guilty until proven innocent.

You have my trust. You have my wholehearted trust right now. You can break it but you have it. You are a part of my family if you're okay with that. I will treat you as my best friend and a part of the family. I will let you into my home and I will treat you as a member of my family. I am not afraid to be betrayed, although it hurts a lot regardless. I have been betrayed. But I never stopped seeing the value of giving new people the benefit of the doubt. In fairness, I have limited resources. I can't let every single person into my home. I have let homeless people into my home but I can't take them all in. I have to guard here and there. But that's more a practical issue than a trust issue.
