Why do we realize late that we are in a toxic relationship, yet in others' eyes is really easy to see?

I don't think you realize late, I think people just ignore flaws and red flags because the desire to be in a relationship is still stronger than the desire to pay attention to the issues.

Why do people climb mountains? What is the reason? Well, there are a bunch, but the real question here is what ISN'T the reason. You climb a mountain (usually) to see the view from the top of it; you DON'T climb a mountain to see the mountain. You can't; you're too close. You only get a tiny portion of it at any given time, even though the view of that portion is much more detailed than you'd get from further away.

It's the same with relationships: when you're too close to see it all, you miss vital parts of it, and it becomes all too easy to delude yourself into thinking that everything is fine.
