Generally speaking, in situations where something goes wrong, some people are more inclined to see what others did wrong to cause the situation and some people are more inclined to see what they did wrong. Which one are you?

Placing blame doesn't move us forward. It just sweeps the issue under the rug, remaining there for us to trip over it in the future. By focusing on what is within our control, we can learn and improve. This doesn't happen when we focus on others. It's not about placing blame, even on ourselves, but about viewing our own role in whatever happened. That allows us to explore other options and come up with more effective alternatives if we encounter a similar situation in the future. I understand people tend to be quick to lay blame, but when have you seen laying blame leading to a positive outcome?

I prefer a hyper-accountability style -- like if someone hits my car on the way to work -- I still see it as my fault for being late. It's not my fault in the sense that it's my fault that someone hit my car, but it's my fault in the sense that I still showed up late and burdened my colleagues who depended on me to show up on time. So I will try to fix that by preparing even earlier in the future.

I think this mindset is common here in Japan. We try to look at everything in the sense of what we could do differently.

I've also taken the blame and the punishment on behalf of others a number of times. For example, in the US in chemistry class, I was with a student when the teacher was away and he accidentally dropped and shattered one of the beakers.

Then the teacher returned and asked us who did it and he didn't speak up. He looked afraid of being punished. Then the teacher was getting upset and said she might have to punish both of us, so I said I broke it and took the punishment which involved some time in detention.

Then later he came to me and asked me why I did that, especially since we weren't friends at all. Yet it is considered an honorable way in Japan even if it might seem very foolish in some other parts. He looked afraid of receiving the punishment and he didn't do anything too bad. So I protect him from the punishment because I am not afraid to be punished.

Typically I don't think so much in terms of blame. I mostly try to think in terms of what I might do to improve my life and the life of people I care about and -- above all else -- people who depend on me. That doesn't exclude firm actions, mind you. If someone is really out of line I will draw a line and stand my ground. Yet I don't think of it in terms of blame. I can only control my own behavior and actions. So instead of focusing on blame, I focus on what I might be able to do to avoid these situations in the future. Even if something isn't my "fault" per se, I might still be able to learn how to reduce my chances of a repeat situation in the future by changing something about the way I think and act.

I dont define circumstances as "Wrong".
I just take it as a trial and error and learn whatever needs to be learned from the experiment
What you don't prefer gives you clarity on what you do prefer
Now that you know what you prefer... just do that..
instead of wasting time trying to play the blame game and pity partying and making an art out of victimhood...
Be easy on others and be easy on yourselves..
Try to work together to make things better

In the situation I as a reflex often try to dodge if I did something wrong/made a mistake, not always blaming others, but act like I was misunderstood or so, though I am getting better at owning up to my actions.
But I essentially feel like it is my fault when I am to blame, also sometimes when I might not be the actual responsible.

I don't blame others if is not their fault... I never had a problem accepting my mistakes or responsibilities

that being said, I do own a business... so, as manager/owner it doesn't really matter where the blame lies, it is going to be my responsibility and fault, and my job to fix it or make up for it even if it was not my fault... blaming others is just a waste of time, clients wants the service yes or yes, and they want it done right... lol
