Why does it take cheating for a cheapskate to give you a gift?

One of my past ex bfs cheated. Luckily I only dated him for 6 months. He was a cheapskate (doing dutch on every single date) but when I found out he cheated; that's the only single time he ever got me Sunflowers (my favorite) and a nice perfume.

Even though it was a good gift, I didn't accept it and was actually pissed off. I told him those are the things you do in the relationship anyways, when you're having a great time... not because you cheated and trying to get me to forget about it.

Seriously why should it take cheating for a cheapskate to give you a gift?

I closed the door in his face, not accepting the gifts. It just didn't seem sincere, not the right moment (when you're happy in your relationship) and him doing it just so I can't take him back. Why should it take cheating to give a girlfriend gifts? How about when you don't cheat and just do it to surprise her on any random day?

Right! That’s why it’s best to tell them what you like in the beginning like flowers, phone calls and texts so that they know what you want early on and they can prove it to you

He knew very well what I liked but never gave me that until he cheated and only did it with the intention of me taking him back. Yuck
