Do you trust people from the beginning, or do they have to earn your trust first?

I used to always trust everyone until they give me a reason to not trust them, but I've been screwed over so many times. What about you?

I believe that the only thing you can trust a person to do is for them to pursue self interest.
Thus, my trust in a person is directly equal to how confident I am in understanding what motivates their ego.

In other words, it varies.
Sometimes I'm willing to trust a person in a matter of weeks, other times I will never trust a person, no matter what they do for me, because I'm certain that my interest is never on their mind.
