Are relationships of people with different maturity levels destined to fail?

I'm really, really into this guy but I feel like our maturity level are very different. He still has little to no concern for social issues, doesn't think about his future, act stupid to impress his friends, feel compelled to be someone he's not to fulfill expectations from a certain group and "to belong", is clueless about relationships... For example, he's a really sweet, timid even, intellectual guy and a mama's boy but insists on putting that "gangster" act because that's what his friends related the best and look up to. It makes me insecure to be into a relationship with concerns so different of mine, and ther funny part is that he's actually older. I love everything else about him. Should I invest in this relationship or should I find someone more similar to me in that aspect?
