Being single is ultimately due to life choices. If you've done things in life to lower your social value - sleeping around a lot early in life, not developing yourself for a potential partner, missing the chance to have kids, etc.

Some people like being alone more than having to cater to someone else, but ultimately that's just the viewpoint from people who have never got to the point they're fully symbiotic with a partner.

You're only single once you've resigned yourself to the idea that finding and keeping a life partner is too much effort.

If you actually want one, it's about fixing any lost social value. That, or just lower your standards a bit. If you're looking for Mr Perfect, remember that you need to be Ms Perfect, or he'll breeze right by you.

I would rephrase your sentence like this: A relationship is not a human right. There are people who screw up in different ways and end up single, but there are people who do everything right and still get fucked over by life or by someone. People have the means to change their ways, but several aren't willing to change and other several try and still fail. It's a combination of initiative, persistence and chance. Most people are alone because they want to, but some end up alone even if they don't want to.
