I do not linger around. If I startle her I also have a Business card with name and email... after she thinks about it and goes"damn, that's a ballsy guy... backbone present" I try to get just enough conversation in for an explanation why right before asking... and an animal joke...

I was starting a lab experiment as a student in a private lab on campus, and she was the TA. She came up behind me, tapped me on the shoulder, and when I turned around she pulled my head down to her and started kissing me. It was really great. We had a very long affair after that.

It's a pretty convoluted, messy story.
The short answer is that I was bold enough to call him up, a veritable stranger, because I need answers and closure to end another relationship, and hoped he would help (which he did.)
But that was the relatively easy part, to what came after and since, which is to meld two lives together, in two different countries, and give up everything I had in one to be with him.
And to keep hopeful, and fighting for us, convincing him that I believed in him and us, when it would have been much, much easier, and less heartache, to just give up, because there were too many differences and logistical issues to deal with.

The answer to your q is that I have asked a few guys out, or reached out first, and it always started simply, with a "Would you like to grab a coffee sometime?" or a "Would you like to come over for dinner. I'll cook."
