My father recently has his new girlfriend after many years of not dating. They've been together for 3 months now. She's the 2nd woman in his life. The 1st one was my mother (his wife), whom died after giving birth to me. He got traumatized for many years, sought therapists at some point, tired his best raising me as a single father and has been single all these years till recently.

He is thinking of whether to remarry or not if things process and gets serious. My father is an old-fashioned man (he's 50 years old) and isn't familiar with the modern dating world too much. He's going at a slow pace with his new relationship.

He's turning 51 on Dec 28th. He went single since my mom died, was been absent from the dating world all these years till now.
Honestly I would approve if he remarries. I think he deserves his happiness at last. I know mom will always be special to him though. They were each other's first at the time.

When my father died at age 63 in March 2003, almost 20 years ago, my mom was my age almost to the day; 59 and soon to turn 60. She remained single for awhile, but, after about 2.5 years, she secretly said to my wife "I need a man." My mom did meet a man a few years younger than her. He was about my age now when they became a couple in Fall 2006. He was a widower even more recently - about a year earlier. They are still a couple but not married because of the benefits they still receive from the dead spouses. My mom and my "step-father" may not be married, but they do have legal paperwork that makes it practically like they are married.

As for me, no, I would not remarry. Even if I wanted to, I am not exactly desirable material for a woman. But, no, I would not remarry anyway. Both of my grandfathers were widowers and they did not remarry. Ironically, both of my grandmothers were widows and they did remarry... to my grandfathers! So, think about that: For me to be alive, two men first had to die at a young age decades earlier, now almost 100 years ago.

Anyway, I've been married for 21 years. I would not want to do marriage again because I like and miss what I had when I was single:

There are plenty of perks being married, regardless, and I am not talking about sex.
But, should my wife pass away - something I do dread - no, I wouldn't remarry...

Something I did not mention because I did not think of it at the time...

One reason I would not remarry is because, to me, marriage is between two people - and two people only, forever. Women may feel differently, but many men do not. When a man is in real love, it overrides his innate desire to be polygamous. Instead, he is hyperfocused on his woman. Even when she is gone, he may not "dishonor" his marital oaths. To me, regardless of the quality of my marriage, I would not degrade the marriage itself by making it a commodity. To me, you marry once and that's it. Of course, economic realities may force a different choice. In a sense, that's what I did because, spiritually, I was married to another woman who left me and irrevocably broke my heart. I "moved on", but that was more like being undead. When I got married to my wife (I am her 3rd husband), it didn't have the passion that I had years earlier for the other woman. I was not capable of that anymore. But, I still had a few decades to live, so I married.

I want to be clear about something else... After the girl who broke my heart, I would not date any woman who could have children. To me, my "children" died with the woman who broke my heart. I could not stand the thought of having a child who "should not be here" if my dreams had come true. I was supposed to have kids with her, not these "consolation prizes". No kid should ever feel like they are a consolation prize or Plan B; I wouldn't do that to a kid. Thus, I chose to ensure that I would never have kids.

I think you're way too spiritual about this entire thing. You can't let this woman ruin the rest of your life just because she broke your heart. You're acting as if your entire life stops after she broke your heart. Everyone has their heart broken at some point in life. You can't just stop everything for that person. That girl who broke your heart probably hadn't thought about you in 30 years. It wouldn't be worth it to still dedicate your life to her.

If you married someone you should not have married, then it was a mistake on your part. You've got nobody to blame but yourself.

But ultimately, I think that you need to learn to move on in life. That girl does not care about you. You are of no significance to her. why would you still stop your life for someone like that?

Everyone has an ex they loved the most. People don't necessarily marry the one they love the most. People marry the person who is the most compatible with them for long term. And sometimes, its the people who are most loyal to you or would do anything for you that matter the most. Not short term intense flings.

kids are a natural gift in itself. A child's self-worth should not be based on who the mother is. If this is your mentality towards children, then there's no doubt in my mind that you would not make a good father. You need to wholeheartedly love and appreciate your children for who they are, not based on who the mother is. You can't say that "these kids did not come out of the woman I fell in love with" so I don't really care for them. Its a terribly selfish thing to say and I'm honestly glad you never had kids because you wouldn't have made a good father any ways.

Um... I have been told numerous times here and elsewhere "I wish you were my father." It's why I am here.

I love kids, but I have my reasons for not wanting kids. One of them is that I was intelligent enough to predict the shitstorm that you were condemned to live in a full decade before you were born. So, knowing what was coming, I gradually, then certainly knew that I did not want kids. Why? I loved them so much and wanted to protect them from what is coming and I knew I couldn't do it except for one way: By not having them. I had the chance to with a boyfriend before but due to what happened to my mother, I get scared of getting pregnant. I get scare the same fate might happen to me. I guess I have my own trauma too. I'm going anon since I don't like talking about my family publicly but no, I wouldn't.

First off, I personally see it as I am cheating on my partner even if it isn't. Even if I was in a open relationship, I would still feel like I'm "replacing" them. I wouldn't say that's true for other people though, it's not actually considered cheating and you're allowed to move on. I personally wouldn't.

Secondly, my father is in a similar situation as yours. He's trying to marry this woman who he has been with since my mom died. He didn't wait like yours did before dating again, I learned about this woman just a few months after my mom died. I won't go into details but he has betrayed his family in literally every way possible for this woman. She was a single mother too but not widowed.

Bless you and you father, he has obviously tried to raise you as he could and has a brilliant kid.

In your case I think it may be your father's coping mechanism if he were to quickly find a rebound and it doesn't necessarily mean he has moved on from your mother's passing. Its not as much about "replacing" as the fact that life is long and there is really no point in remaining single and lonely for the rest of your life. Just because your spouse has passed away, it does not mean you need to condemn yourself to a life of loneliness. At the end of the day, the living spouse still has a life to live. Let them enjoy the years they have left before they die.

Remarrying is not wrong. But remarrying a few months after a death is wrong. Your father probably didn't love your mother if he remarried so quickly.

You can very much be in love with someone and cherish their memories and still be with someone else, although it's more likely for people who have loved their spouse more, to wait longer before moving on. Her problem isn't that her dad moved on after her mom's death, it's that he neglected his responsibilities as a father that concerns her.
Kids should be a parent's first priority before anything else, and any new relationship should be accepting of that.

I honestly do not believe someone would mourn so drastically differently. We all my be different. That is too severely drastic of a difference. I honestly think he might've just wanted to get someone new so that he can get over his wife's death. OR he never actually cared much for his wife in the first place. I knew of a guy who had a child with his wife's best friend. She cared and babysat for this kid for over 10 years. His wife had a heart attack after a neighbor finally told her. She was sent to the hospital then came back recovered. She kicked her husband out on the streets for year. His kids allowed him back him eventually because he was their father after all. Their relationship was never the same but they lived together for another 10 years until she died of a stroke. She was 15 years younger than him.

A few months after she died, he was in his late 60s and remarried a woman in her 20s with 8 kids. This sent shock waves throughout his entire family. Two of his kids decided never to talk to him again. His new wife was a young latin immigrant desperate for a green card. I guess thats what she married him for. Now he is dead and she has inherited his assets. Plus fighting for an apartment his daughter lived in (which she thinks she's entitled to)

Believe it or not, all throughout history its not uncommon for young women to marry old men for money or assets. Women were not allowed or given the educatuonal and career opportunities that we enjoy now. So without a husband , women would starve. If she worked, she would make an unsurvivable wage. Honestly, I think the relationship game is extremely different when you are older. Both partners are looking for things that are far greater than superficial topics. Heck my dad remarried after his first wife died, and he then married my mom. So without that I wouldn't be alive, and I am very grateful he did. I don't believe that its healthy to hold on to the dead, let them finally be at peace in the afterlife (Whatever it may be). Your self care should always be of high importance, and it may take a long time to even find someone else or work through emotions from your previous marriage. It was hard growing up without a mother but yes I would find comfort with my father's older sister and both grandmothers whom are still alive. It was devastating to my maternal grandparents as mom was their only child. Even though that's still not the same as having your mother in your life, that was the closest to having mother figures. Another way this impacted me is that her death itself is the only thing pretending me to be a mother myself. I would've probably been married and with a kid by now but I ended my last relationship due. I was afraid of committing more but I never got to tell him that I'm scared of childbirth, of the same fate happening to me, of my not being there for my kid. I would love to have a child but I'm scared.

Every single time I've gone to her grave (2-3 times a year), I've felt comfort. The last time I visited her grave with my grandparents and a couple relatives it was cold. Strangely I was the only one that felt warm and hot. That always happens to me whenever I visit her grave, I feel a warm wind.

My wife and I had this exact discussion about a year ago. We'd gone to a funeral earlier in the day; the husband and father of a young family at our church (he himself was under 30) was killed in an accident at work. She told me that if she died prematurely, for lack of a better term, she'd want me to get married again. I told her the same thing of me. Marriage has been good for both of us.

Now it would also depend on when. If I was still in my 30s or 40s, I probably would. But if I was in my 70s or 80s, I'm not so sure.

It really depends on my relationship with my husband. Overall if we really loved eachother and my husband wouldn't remarry if I passed, I would do the same for him too- this kind of love is very rare.

For the longest time I thought I wouldn't remarry because I felt that doing that would seem like I was betraying my husband in a way, like I was replacing him with someone else. However, now coming to think about it, there is no replacement, it is just about finding happiness in a different form while still keeping the old memories with me.

I do however find your father's choice refreshing, so sweet to hear his dedication for your mother even after her passing, especially because he would have been young at the time she died.

Yeah he was only 24 (almost 25) and extremely devastated. She was snatched out of his life while both loved each other, were happy together and were excited about their upcoming child, me. This is definitely not the same as a break-up or divorce because he never got to really experienced a full marriage nor know how it would've progressed.
I'm glad he's dating again after all these years. He needed to be happy for once.

It's harder work as an older person... we get more set in our ways, communication is takes more effort, easier to be stressed, we forget stuff, don't hear as well. But possibly there's less financial stress and we know ourselves more. your father... may not since he didn't get the challenge so much. If they are right personalities and in a good place, maybe it works well. Otherwise, stress may go up and it doesn't.

he's wise to go slow. I think the real question is, whats the purpose of getting married... there should be something greater that comes from the union.

I think it is ok to remarry. But what is not ok is when you get remarried right after your spouse dies , such as less than 2 years later. There are actually a lot of people out there who remarry almost immediately after their spouse dies. It just shows how much they didn't care about their spouse. If, in 5 years, at age 18, I get married and my husband dies when I'm19, since I would be a very pretty sexy young widow, is there anyone, not trying be argumentative, that doesn't believe, I would remarry. Yes age is a factor. Though my father took a super long time to recover. He was young when mom died. Some people process trauma differently. He got affected so much that he shutdown on dating for many years till recently.

I am not married but I don't think I would if my wife passed away before I did. I know my grandfather's wife passed he remarried but the marriage didn't last long only a few months. My grandfather enjoyed being single than being married.

yeah dad took a very long time to recover. He lost her when he was still 24 years old (almost 25). He used to cry at nights, blame himself and shutdown on dates, never wanted to date another young woman nor get her pregnant.

Yeah probably if I was still married and it’s similar to being divorced because it takes years before you want to remarry anyway so it’s almost the same as if the spouse died since divorce is like death anyway

They're actually not the same at all. Divorce is when either you, your spouse or both don't want the marriage anymore (it can be for any reason) and it has gone beyound the point of it being salvaged. My mom's death happened when my parents were at their happiest moment of their lives, expecting me to be born. They were so happy together and she got snatched from his life. It's not really the same as divorce. It's actually sadder because when they die while you're happy and in love, you'll never know how the marriage would've progressed.

Well I don't understand the point of moving in with your partner only to then end up in a break-up. All those years of ''Oh I love you, oh the emotions, I'll be with you for the rest of my life'' was for nothing then. Then again, I've never moved in with anyone. I can pretty much say the same time about what's the use of a verbal agreement when you can have one foot out the door at anytime and break up so easily and keep on with your cohabitation for years. That's not a commitment.
My father and I believe it's more than just a piece of paper though. Nowdays it's harder to find the commitment my father had. It wasn't extra money. They loved each so much.

I suggest finding a woman that thinks the same and is on your same page on marriage being just a piece of paper. Very few woman would be happy about livng a forever girlfriend though but good luck finding one who is happy with that arrangement.

Many people dont realize when you move in with someone, you real see that person how they are. So before you'd only see all the good things about that person. Moving in truly shows you if you were meant to be together. But also can take few years to see that full connection. Love is a strong word. People seen to toss it around like nothing. I see many people dont marriage. But I haven't meet any women that don't want to get married. If I have , they already with some one.

Yes you're going to have a harder time finding a woman that never wants marriage. To give you a comparison of how hard that is: it's as hard as a woman asking for a man with a low sex drive that rarely wants sex.
Since you're 41, maybe if you find a woman closer to your age range (not in her 20's as most of them want marriage eventually) like 35-40 years old, whom is divorced (with or without kids) and doesn't ever want to remarry. That would probably be a more suitable fit for you.
