Ex texted me that he has broken up with the girl he was dating. But he deleted the message when I didn’t respond for few hours. What does this mean?

We were in a relationship for 1.5 years. When he moved for work he paused the relationship. Couple months later he informed me that he’s dating someone in the new city. He met me when he was back in town for work. When I visited his city for work he took me for a long boat ride and then 2 weeks later texted me that he has broken up with the girl he was dating.

I saw the notification but couldn’t respond immediately. 6 hours later when I opened watsapp to respond, he had just deleted the message. But I still responded and said “oh ok, sorry to hear that. Hope you’re doing ok”. He said “thanks” and since then he hasn’t said anything. He didn’t even respond when texted him on Christmas. What does this mean? Was he trying to reconcile with me? Was he just testing me?

I think he's letting you know he's available if your interested, after you didn't respond right away he may have felt rejection, it also gave him time to think about it and may have decided it's was not such a good idea.

Sounds to me that he basically likes you but is not serious about you and you currently are not readily available so he's getting his kicks elsewhere.
