I'm sure there's some psychological answer for this, and I'm nowhere near qualified to answer such a loaded question.
I think the trick is to recognize these things quicker so you don't waste time on someone who has proven their heart isn't what you thought it was, or would be.
People are allowed to not like someone, but if there's any stringing-along involved, I'd say they're due for a scolding.

Because we are broken and we seek love in the wrong places believe in anyone’s lie in hopes of love. building walls and shutting down Until eventually we hate ourselves and push people away and accept abuse as love our baggage never allowing us to find any form of normal and happiness but instead finding more broken people and predators who leach off of what we can give them.

We take something (s) a person said or did. Attach more meaning to it then it deserves, fabricate an elaborate story behind it. And then are surprised when they're not playing the role we created for them. Women are particularly susceptible to this because of thier emotions and ability to fantasize. But guys do this to to a lesser extent.

I don't fall into this trap anymore. Because unless a woman flat out tells me she she's interested I just assume she doesn't.

Because we want to be liked. Most people, want to be liked, by most people. So, if we feel like we aren't liked, we try our best to get them to like us, FINALLY. Only to then turn around and say bye, since we "got what we wanted" in the END
