So my girlfriend of a year just told me she's doesn't like to be asked on dates by me and would rather be invited to something I'm already doing. She has already declined a few of these invitations.

She's trying to get closer by involving herself in your everyday life. Where you go she goes and who you are seeing she is seen by. Hope you are serious about her because she is.
Well yeah... only a certain kind of gold digger type of woman actually want the date situation one thinks of when someone thinks about it.
It's too formal and is actually lame and boring if you think about it. I reject the "date" idea entirely and rather just go fishing or hunt some pheasants for a little while. It's cheaper, doesn't require dressing up, and if something develops, it can develop from a more organic sort of setting.
Plus think about it... you put a fishing pole or a shotgun in a chicks hands... she's either going to impress you with her already learned skills or she is about to learn some stuff that will stick with her for life.
This chick probably would rather go with you to a family get-together for dinner than try to figure out if she can order half the menu out of you from Applebee's... that's sort of a good thing. If you're trying to get a chick in your life like that that is... if not... she's trying to actually be a part of your real life and it might be a danger.
It's important to respect your girlfriend's feelings and preferences when it comes to dating and spending time together. While it's understandable to feel disappointed or frustrated, it's important to communicate your feelings and expectations clearly and respectfully.
Try to understand your girlfriend's perspective and why she may prefer to be invited to something you're already doing rather than being asked on a formal date. It's possible that she may feel more comfortable or relaxed in a casual setting, or may prefer to spend time with you in a more spontaneous or unplanned way.
If you're feeling unsure about how to proceed, it may be helpful to have an open and honest conversation with your girlfriend about your feelings and expectations for the relationship. Remember to prioritize your own well-being and to communicate in a way that aligns with your values and priorities.
If you continue to feel uncertain or have questions or concerns, it may be helpful to talk to a trusted friend or therapist about your feelings and experiences. Remember that communication, respect, and empathy are key components of any healthy and positive relationship.
