If one partner makes more money than the other should both partners still go 50/50 when paying for stuff?

My boyfriend makes more money than me but we both agreed that it should be 50/50 but if we were to move in together how would that work if one of us makes more than the other?

There is no "should" about it. It's whatever the two of you agree on. Having said that, I don't think there is any obligation for the higher income to pay more. I'd say that 50-50 is the default and the expected. I actually think it's presumptuous to expect to pay less than half.

You are living there. You are using the utilities and eating food. Unless you agree otherwise, those things should be split evenly, just like any other room mates. You can buy your personal stuff and he can buy his personal stuff.

For possessions that you both use, like furniture, I think the two of you should still buy it separately. I think it's a bad idea to share possessions at this point. That opens a whole can of worms. If he can afford to buy more or better furniture, that's fine as long as he owns it. If you break up or otherwise move out, then each person keeps whatever possessions are theirs. This works out really well and saves a lot of potential arguments in the future.

You guys are not married, and I don't think you should act like it unless you have a very long term committed relationship. At this point, I think the finances should be treated like any other room mates.

Although my husband as a successful business owner makes significantly more than I do, we have our own separate bank accounts along with an additional one for All Household Expenses into which we contribute 50/50.

However at the present time with me taking extended maternity leave, my husband is naturally covering the majority of all the bills, expenses etc.

If you choose to be in a 50/50 relationship, then you are agreeing to go 50/50 regardless of what anyone makes. Especially since you are married yet, neither of you are entitled to each other's money.

It's your fraction of the total income. Ie if the salery isn't 50/50 then the bills shouldn't be billed 50/50. That is a roommate agreement. As partners you should share load in whatever direction it goes. So if one earn twice the other, the fair split is 33/67 not 50/50.

Yes if you actually are a couple married or not and living together, you should split shared bills fairly. Not your personal expenses, so food, rent, internet, heating, electricity , garbage collection and stuff along those lines.

It depends on the disparity. My wife made slightly more than me and then I picked up a side gig so I made more. We pretty much go halvsies on everything. we don't even discuss it anymore.

It didn't need to be exactly 50/50 for both parties to contribute. If you're planning to live together, sit down and make a budget and determine who's continuing to what based on both of your incomes. You can be more fair without sticking to strict adherence of splitting everything down the middle

I don't want her feeling as though she's tapped all the time for funds. So I think the expenses should be portioned accordingly. I don't mind paying a little more so she is able to have some savings and work towards her goals.

My girl and I split according to our income. Which was a 60/40 split. But she didn't like it because she felt like she wasn't good enough. Which is complete horseshit, but oh well.

Still 50/50, keep your accounts separate, have one account for the household expenses which you both contribute to, you both agreed that it should be 50/50, if you want to change the agreement discus it with your boyfriend.

If your net pay is 25% of his he pays 75%. If your net pay is 40% of his then he pays 60%. Your net pay ÷ his net pay × 100 = the percentage of what you pay when it comes to bills and other stuff. He pays the remainder.
