I get asked for IT help by girls because that is my profession. What I find they really really want is for me to watch them repeat the same mistake as rapidly as they can over and over again.

If I find them a work around they're... well not pissed off but are decidedly miffed.

Girls just wanna just wanna VENT.

Venting is important and most of the time I just want to vent as opposed to actually wanting the person to try and help. If I want help I’ll usually ask directly “Can you help me with this?” instead of “Can I talk to you about this?”

I think he talking about a difference between (typical) men and women. Often men will talk in the hopes of finding a solution to a problem, but women will talk about a situation to share their feelings. Because of that, when a woman talks about a problem to a man, the man tries to come up with solutions but that's not the desired response. The opposite is a man talking about a problem and being frustrated by just having their feelings validated instead of getting practical suggestions.

@goaded oh ok - thanks! I have taken to asking women friends (yes, I have some) that are upset,

"do you want me to listen, or help you to fix this? If it's both, in what order do you want me to do these things?"

This mostly works, interestingly enough - although it's obvious to me that the "listen to my feelings" part is a lot is usually a lot longer than the "let's fix this" part.
