Or it could be that she’s not comfortable with eye contact. She probably finds it weird to face you when she’s trying to sleep.

I do this sometimes and it has to do with not liking the feeling of someone breathing on me... that or I'm upset at my wife, but mostly the breathing on my face thing. Drives me up the wall and I can't get comfortable while its happening.

It might just be that she has a preferred side to face (I like lying with my left side down, and my heart low in my body for instance)
If you have fixed places in the bed that might explain it.
