The more we know about ourselves, the greater the likelihood we've discovered what works best for us in a partner. When we're young, we don't know who we are, so it's easier to grow together. Older people may have discovered what works best, so they tend to be less flexible. I used to believe I was flexible enough to make anything work, but after being in a relationship with a yeller, I realized I would never want to repeat that experience. Though there are deal breakers for me to feel safe (ie irresponsible, inconsiderate, self-centered), I tend to be very tolerant of differences that aren't pushed on me.
Ideally, we don't want a partner who is very rigid regarding expectations, yet we do want someone who is self-aware enough to have discovered what would be most compatible. Why would we want to just roll the dice and hope for the best?
