I will admit had situation been different we'd likely have never broken up. We were both loyal, into each other, etc. But work and other outside factors made the relation stupidly difficult.
Anyway I randomly sent him a text and he responded. Even in our relation he didn't always respond immediately due to being overworked and far too stressed out.
I admit I do want to try and reconnect and see if there's potential to rekindle the relationship. But I don't know how without seeming desperate.

Sounds A LOT like something I was going through. I had been dropping out of the picture from nowhere because I was overwhelmed. And I was also worried she was just using me for attention because I had heard she was entertaining other guys and had been doing it even after I told her I had a problem with it.
If I was him, and it's been the same amount of time that you haven't spoke, I'd be dreaming about you, thinking about you even when I didn't want to, and it hurts everytime I do because I never met someone I could be comfortable with and make me superman at the same time. I'd weep and cry for weeks every night because I was heartbroken over not being there.
You wouldn't seem desperate, if he really cares, you'd be able to spill your heart out and he'd be able to do the same without feeling any remorse for your emotions.
Well I don't entertain other guys, I'm not some cheap tramp.
Then you have nothing to worry about.
