Is it important for a man to be able to support his family on one income when his significant other is ill or pregnant?

I make about 160 k a year but I never really thought but is it important that a man make enough to support a family on one income?

I mean I'd say it's ideal for either spouse to be able to support the family at least short term on a single income in case something happens to the other person, but that's not necessarily realistic in all cases. That's pretty much what saving, insurance, etc is for.
