I think that if a truth hurts to hear, it's because we've rejected it in some form or another. Whether it be through our behaviors, actions, thoughts (especially beliefs), etc. At some time or another, we've thought about that perspective. And it hurt to entertain then just as much or even more than it does now.
There are many reasons why we might reject a "truth." Part of us knows that it's likely a truth & we're embarrassed by it or even disgusted by it. Or maybe we're unaware that it is or could be a truth & we simply don't think it's accurate at all. It's not what we want to hear. Whatever the case may be, we need to function in the world whether we like it or not. So that leaves us to either accept our reality or alter is (as a means of coping - which is normal & can be healthy in certain circumstances).
But our altered realities foundation is only as strong as the truth is hidden. And if or when it reveals itself or is revealed in certain ways by others... Oh man. Depending on how deep we are in the illusion & where we are in our life, it may feel like a betrayal on the deepest level. Betrayed by our own reality. By what makes up everything we see, feel, hear, smell, taste, etc.
Then we might become filled with many negative emotions because our ego is trying to protect itself by providing the most visceral reaction of rejection. I believe that how we view the world can be deeply linked with our perception of our own selves. And the ego wouldn't kick on high gear unless there were real life implications. Whether or not they're simply confined to our own minds.
Now I have to say, rejecting the "truth" isn't always a bad thing. Because like I mentioned above, truth is simply just a different perspective. One that seems more accurate. However, it isn't always more accurate. There are many "truths" that are being told right now as I'm typing this that aren't true at all. Many may hold some objective accuracy, but many many more are just bs.
The saying goes, the truth shall set you free. But if you have lied to save a personâs feelings from being hurt - the truth can destroy trust, love, respect, especially embarrassment.
Example - I was 16 years old and recently found out the power of orgasms and my penis. Bam bam mom knocks on locked bathroom door and Iâm sitting on the toilet masturbating my penis. But i have the fart fan going so I turned it off and said yeah? She said what are you doing Iâm there? I said crapping what else? She accepted that and said supperâs ready and left. Did I tell the truth? No for fear of embarrassment. Now sheâs a nurse (retired nurse now) she probably put the pieces of the puzzle together - (16 year old boy, in the bathroom and no lingering odor of poop even when I turned the fart fan off to talk to her through the door). She could have flat out said no you arenât crapping - youâre playing with yourself arenât you? Youâre playing with your penis! Youâre masturbating in there arenât you? But no to save probably me embarrassment possibly her, she bought the crapping lie.
It only hurts because the receiver is sensitive. Or the path to betterment is simply to steep for them to climb. Not that it actually is, but they are not ready yet to take that challenge.
Nobody wants to hear that they're wrong. Denial.
In short, the truth hurts because the receiver can't take it.
The truth hurts people that deep down know they are in the wrong. It's a call out on their beliefs system. Which even if their beliefs are wrong its really hard to change their mindset to what is right.

Truth reveals lies... and those who tell lies.
The truth only hurts when itâs true and you donât agree!
The truth about what? Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny? Or the truth about why he came home late two nights last week? Or "do these pants make my butt look big?"
The phrase "the truth hurts" is a common expression used to convey that facing or accepting the reality of a situation can be emotionally painful or difficult. There are several reasons why the truth might be perceived as hurtful:
Dissonance with expectations:
Sometimes, we have certain expectations or beliefs about a situation, ourselves, or others. When the truth contradicts these expectations, it can be disheartening and uncomfortable. This cognitive dissonance can lead to emotional distress.
Facing personal flaws:
The truth may reveal our own imperfections, weaknesses, or mistakes. Confronting these aspects of ourselves can be challenging and may cause feelings of shame, guilt, or insecurity.
Loss and change:
Truth can lead to the realization that something we valued or cherished is no longer present or is different from what we believed. This sense of loss or change can be painful to accept.
Fear of judgment:
Discovering the truth might mean that others will judge or criticize us. Fear of being negatively evaluated can lead to emotional distress.
Challenging beliefs: When the truth challenges deeply held beliefs or ideologies, it can be emotionally unsettling. People often have an emotional investment in their beliefs, and having them challenged can feel threatening.
Loss of control:
Accepting the truth can sometimes lead to the realization that we have little or no control over a situation, which can be uncomfortable for individuals who prefer to feel in control of their lives.
if a thin guy hears "you are fat" not true so not hurt. but if i tell the fat guy you are fat, the TRUTH hurts. not a surprise he knows he is fat but can't bear to hear that he is different. and now he can call me a "shamer"
because society has been conditioned into emotional snowflakes who based their thought processes on feelings thus logic, truth and facts seem extremely harsh, rude and offensive but feelings don't change the outcome because facts don't care about feelings
Oh ya know... it's reality. And reality will knock your teeth out with it's fist... and the rest of your teeth with it's steeled toed boots. that's why most of us like a fantasy. It doesn't hurt 🙃
I hardly ask for the truth because i can't handle it lmao
Because it's in cahoots with the damn mirror and scale!!!
the truth maybe hurtful but i have Jesus and his presence in my life alone covers all the pain and suffering and hurt that i have to experience. i still feel so blessed and grateful.
It only hurts when it points out that you're doing something wrong. And it can only set you free if you're willing to make the changes necessary.
Truth is like a dead skunk in the middle of the street. You can walk away from it but it still stinks.
Truth also opens your eyes,
matures you,
teaches you,
makes you wiser,
opens new doors for you.
the truth is. it doesn't. the turth only hurts for people when its the truth about something that is wrong with who ever is hearing the truth. in fact if anything the truth makes me happy, not hurt.
Humans seek pleasure and avoid pain. The truth... it just isn't delightful for people unless they're insane like I am. I lift weights... that's a form of pain... but what do most people do? That's right... they're fucking fat.
Too hurt? Fat ass? Pleasure and pain?
Favorite amateur porn sure? â
It conflicts with your perception of yourself and for some foolish reason reason you want people to perceive in a particular way. If you actually count the number of people whose opinion of you does matter, you will find it is not many.
its not the truth that hurts its being reminded that you can't do anything about it.
because it doesn't fit with what we emotionally are attached to. It clashes with our sub conscious... which could have learned wrong.
that's like... really easy...
Maybe because we bullshit each other all the time so whenever someone actually says the truth its unexpected and shocking to us.
it doesn't. pain is a physical thing, not a mental thing. truth can make you upset and it does that, because you liked the false thing that you thought to be true.
Most people don't wanna hear the truth about themselves.
The truth brings out whatever the person said, it was no longer a lie.
Honestly? Because most women have a hard time distinguishing fantasy from reality. Most the time they think you're being mean. When they reality is she has spent most of her time creating or believing a fiction in her head. And hearing the truth comes as quite a buzzkill.
Because now you are compelled to make a change from something that you are familiar with or comfortable with.
Sometimes telling the truth is like breaking the bone to reset the leg correctly.
it hurt cause It real and we do not want face it. it Like failure you could not live with your failure so you go back to it.
"The trouble is, it stops becoming a dream when it is true. It becomes something that can leave you" - Kristina Mahr
Clears out cobwebs & "mental rubble" for new pathways to emerge or be formed.
Truth hurts when it forces you to face an unpleasant reality
Probably cause you expected something way better
The truth hurt but also the truth will set you free!!! 😉
Because sometimes the truth is what you don't want to hear
Ignorance is bliss. The truth only brings unhappiness, but it also sets you free, if that's what you're into.
Sunk cost fallacy. You have invested so much into what you thought was true that you really don't want to let go of the other "reality"
I can't generalize "truth" because there are also happy truth. Hearing a good news that's the truth feels good. Truth or lies, there are always somethings people don't wanna hear.
Wouldn't that make them good truth the opposite of ''hurt''? That would just make people more sensitive about the truth which doesn't necessarily mean it hurts them all the time.
Because people like to live in denial and don't like a mirror being shown up to them
It doesn't when you are always honest with yourself. The truth only hurts when you buildup lies you tell yourself then the truth is exposed.
bad parenting is the leading cause
the truth does not hurt realizing that youâve been living a lie is what hurts
Comforting lies, are by definition comforting. Truth takes that comfort away.
well if you always tell the truth, you never have to cover up a lie
Everyone lived in their own personal bubble with their own ideas and opinions, but there is one scientific reality.
BECAUSE IT OPENS YOUR DAMN EYES, AND MAKES YOU GROW TF UP.
Because people donât like to hear the truth when itâs something bad
Truth tells you who your real friends are!
Facts donât care about your feelings.
You'll have to ask Ben Finegold
It can be like ripping off a bandaid.
Because it's hard to tell? 🤔
I cam handle it
It only hurts if it is bitter or hard to accept
We are so used to beautiful lies
