A waitress was speaking to my boyfriend in a foreign language, it was quite irritating?

Am I overreacting here? I was out with my boyfriend having a meal after a long and hard week. My boyfriend is from a different country and he has another language as his first.

There was a waitress from his country too. They were speaking to eachother a fair bit in their language as she was stood next to our table and I obviously couldn’t understand. They were asking where eachother were from etc. Whenever she came past either of them would make little comments. Whenever she came to the table she would speak in his language. When the bill came, they spoke in their language too.

I was feeling a tad annoyed. I’d come to spend time with my boyfriend. Am I overreacting here?

Most immigrants love to find fellows from their mother country.

Finally here is someone they can talk to without having to worry about using wrong term / word, who will understand culture and history of their country, who knows what they are talking about when they mention X Y or D city or holiday or celebration, etc.

It's a massive relief.

When living in a foreign country where locals know little to nothing about your home and what they do know is oftentimes wrong and oftentimes the locals of the foreign country don't care to learn, finding a fellow nationale is like finding water in a desert.

Would t worry too much. Unless he goes back on his own on a regular bases to see her. If this is a one time chit chat in their native language, no harm. You can also ask him what they were talking about.

Yeah, unless she was flirting. If you think about it, when you're an immigrant, sometimes it's nice to be able to speak your native language sometimes.

Oh it's much more than just speaking the language. When a foreigner finds a fellow nationale here is someone that understands your country, culture, hertiage, holidays, celebrations, etc.

It is a massive relief particularly for foreigners who end up in other countries where the locals know little to nothing of that immigrant's homeland & don't care to learn.

Possibly but it was a little rude. Both might have liked to speak their native language for a little so maybe cut a break.

I would be annoyed too. That could come off as flirtatious or it could seem they were bitching about you. Did you ask what they were talking about?
